The Spirits of Tuckavania: Finger Trap of Evil

This is Telemakfilms and Hiro Super’s third cinematic outing. It’s been said that, after the enormous success of their previous collaboration (”Hard Crick“, “Blue Moon“), which explored the psychology of men in society, Super wanted to make a lighter fantasy fare that can be enjoyed by family audience. Super presented the idea to Telemak, who is a rather unlikely choice to direct a movie of this genre.“That is not my thing,” said Telemak at the movie’s premier, who is mostly known for adult and edgier experimental films like the recently released “Hatikva” and Modern Geisha movies. Telemak initially turned down the offer.

Super, however, continued for months trying to convince the acclaimed director that he’s indeed “the right and the only guy” who can do justice to this specialized genre.“No other director alive is more appropriate for children’s fantasy movies than Telemak,” said Super, who also stars as Evil Joker in this first installment of the planned Tuckavania trilogy.

“When he shoots, he’s like a little boy with such innocence, passion for life and imagination. He’s George Lucas of this generation, but with no merchandise ambition,” Super said.

Telemak finally gave in to Super’s relentless requests when they met a young doll-maker girl Juri at an artists network party organized by Sepha, who worked with Telemak and Super in “Hard Crick” and would reprise the role of Ghost in “Finger Trap of Evil’.

Telemak and Super were so impressed with Juri’s dolls that they immediately finalized the moviemaking deal with the doll artist.

“That was my producer instinct. When something must be done, I will do it without much planning or contemplating. I know it’s risky, but this style of filmmaking usually works well for Telemak and me,” Super said.

According to early reviews, Super’s producer instinct was right on target with this children’s fantasy movie project. Major critics are almost unanimously hailing the movie as one of the best films this summer.There’s already a talk that the Tuckavania will spawn a TV animation series spinoff with its vivid and colorful characters, including Evil Joker and the Doll Maker. “That would be nice,” Telemak said with shy smile.

All eyes are on when the sequel will be made. Industry experts expect that, with several projects they are now handling as Tele’s Crashion Hiros (with musician/artist Kate Crash, who inspired Super to make the Tuckavania tales), it can take years before the next installment will be made.

“Don’t worry,” said Super. “When something must be done, we will do it quick. That’s our style.”
